The Memory Studies Association expresses its grave concern over news that the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office has filed for the International Memorial Society (LINK: https://www.memo.ru/en-us/) to be shut down.
Since its inception, Memorial has been an important participant in international scholarly debates about the memory of the 20th century. Through its research projects, its publications, exhibitions, and its traditional and electronic archival collections, it has set standards in the field of memory studies and has safeguarded the memory of the peoples of Russia for future generations. Through its oral history projects, it has preserved the legacy of groups ranging from Orthodox Christians to those fighting to prevent nuclear war, highlighting the diversity of Russian memory and keeping alive the memory of Soviet citizens persecuted, for example, as forced laborers by Nazi Germany.
Far from being an agent of nefarious foreign influence in Russia, Memorial has been a champion of original Russian approaches to dealing with the past in other countries, and has contributed to healing the wounds of the past and building bridges between Russian society and the people of neighboring countries. Memorial’s prestige is unparalleled by any other Russian scholarly association.
We, an international association of memory studies scholars, stand in support of the International Memorial Society and hope that the organization can be saved and any existing legal issues can be resolved without the dissolution of Memorial.
We call upon all branches of the Russian state—the State Duma and Federation Council, the government and presidential administration, the Supreme Court, and the Public Chamber—to resist the harmful initiative of the Prosecutor-General’s Office and contribute to restoring Russia’s standing on the international stage.

Международная Ассоциация исследователей памяти (MSA) глубоко обеспокоена новостью о том, что Генеральная прокуратура Российской Федерации подала иск о ликвидации Международного Мемориала.
С момента своего основания общество «Мемориал» является важным участником международной научной дискуссии о памяти о XX веке. Своими исследовательскими проектами, публикациями, выставками, а также бумажными и электронными архивами «Мемориал» задает планку для исследователей памяти и сберегает память народов России для будущих поколений. Своими проектами в области устной истории «Мемориал» сохранил наследие самых разных общественных групп, от православных христиан до борцов за предотвращение ядерной войны, демонстрируя многообразие российской памяти и не давая угаснуть памяти о советских гражданах, подвергшихся, например, принудительному труду в нацистской Германии.
Общество «Мемориал» отнюдь не является агентом злостного иностранного влияния в России – напротив, оно выступало и выступает в других странах проводником самобытных российских подходов в обращении с прошлым и внесло вклад в исцеление ран прошлого и налаживание мостов между российским обществом и народами соседних стран. Международный престиж «Мемориала» не имеет равных среди российских научных объединений.
Мы, международная Ассоциация исследователей памяти, выражаем свою поддержку «Мемориалу» и надежду на то, что любые юридические разногласия смогут быть разрешены без закрытия организации.
Мы призываем все ветви российской власти—Государственную Думу и Совет Федерации, правительство и президентскую администрацию, Верховный Суд и Общественную палату—воспрепятствовать вредоносной инициативе Генеральной прокуратуры и содействовать восстановлению международной репутации России.
