Overview:

Panel moderator Professor Mary McCarthy of Drake University will talk with the authors of three recent books on the history of women from Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia subjected to enforced military prostitution by the Japanese army. Each author will reflect on what their research adds to the historiography of this topic and what is new about their findings. They will address the particular challenges women from these countries have faced in bringing their experiences to light and why the transnational movement for redress has not had as much impact in these countries or for these particular women. By doing so, the participants will offer new insights into this global movement for redress and how national, patriarchal, and local cultures have impeded it.
