The School of Media, Arts and Humanities at the University of Sussex is launching a new research lab focused on enhancing digital literacies and capacities in organisations dealing with the Holocaust and victims of National Socialism, across the world. Alongside the production of novel, interdisciplinary research, the Lab’s team will produce original digital outputs and will collaborate to provide an extensive impact and knowledge exchange programme working with project partners in the UK, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, and Serbia, to host events that bring together heritage professionals, academics, and those working in the creative and tech industries in different regions. You can view some of the preliminary work that informed the founding of the Lab here.

The School is looking to appoint a Research Fellow in Computer Science with an active or developing profile in research and practice that explores the use of computational technologies for the presentation and exploration of data related to digital heritage and a competence in developing databases and archives. The project will sit in both the Sussex Weidenfeld Institute of Jewish Studies and the Sussex Digital Humanities Lab, and the Research Fellow will benefit from the thriving interdisciplinary research cultures of both. You will also benefit from working with the Lab’s growing international network and will have the opportunity to develop and participate in events at partner institutions across Europe.

You will hold a completed PhD and possess a portfolio of relevant work that will be requested at the interview stage. You will be sensitive to working with organisations and data related to difficult heritage and will be a great team player as well as taking initiative to work on your own at times. In this role you will benefit from working closely with the Lab’s research software engineers and a technical specialist, who will support your work. You will have dedicated independent research time but will also contribute to meeting the key objectives agreed with our funders in a timely manner.

The project is initially funded for 5 years. There may be scope to extend the contract after this duration if additional funds are raised.

Please contact Dr Victoria Grace Walden v.walden@sussex.ac.uk for informal enquiries.

The University of Sussex values the diversity of its staff and students, and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds.

Please note: The University requires that work undertaken for the University is performed from the UK.
