The State of Berlin / Germany is pursuing the plan to propose two urban areas of Berlin – the Karl-Marx-Allee (construction phases I and II) in the East of the city and the Interbau 1957 in the West – for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Both areas were considered as epitomizing the ideals of urban development and urban living in the former Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic.

In order to better understand the international significance and reception of these urban areas, the Berlin Monument Authority (Landesdenkmalamt Berlin) is carrying out an international research project. It looks at the coverage of the Interbau 1957 in public media of selected Central and East European countries (USSR, Hungary, CSSR, Poland) and at the coverage of the construction works in the Karl-Marx-Allee in the public media of selected Western countries (Netherlands, Italy, Denmark, France, Switzerland, Austria). The research is complemented by a media analysis of some non-aligned countries (the former Yugoslavia, Sweden).

We are looking for young researchers who will help with the compilation of the media samples for this research project. Applicants should possess the following qualifications:

• First experiences with collaborative historical and archival research
• Undergraduate degree in a relevant academic discipline (history, media studies, architecture, urban planning)
• Language skills in one or several of the national languages included in the sample
• Reliability, punctuality, accuracy

Articles in the following types of media will be researched:

• Book publications (especially academic books)
• Academic journals
• Leading political media (daily newspapers, cinema newsreels, TV reports, radio reports, etc.)
• Popular magazines (life style magazines etc.)

Applicants are expected to independently research library catalogues, newspaper and other media archives, based on a list of media provided by the researchers. Relevant articles will be included in a database, complemented by a digital copy of the source.
