Call for Fellowships

The Max Weber Foundation (MWF) supports Ukrainian researchers who cannot continue their work at their home institutions. The German Historical Institute Warsaw (GHI), which is one of the ten institutes of the MWF, is now implementing this initiative. The GHI offers its research infrastructure, library and offices for researchers from Ukraine working in history and related disciplines to continue their academic work. New scholarships will start on April 1, 2024 and will be part of the program that has been running since April 1, 2022.

From April 1, 2024, the German Historical Institute Warsaw, as part of the Max Weber Foundation, will award scholarships to support researchers from Ukraine, doing research in history and related disciplines, who immediately before February 24, 2022 worked or still work at an academic institution in Ukraine. Beyond enabling research, this funding is primarily intended to promote scientific excellence and networking with academic structures in Ukraine.

The funding covers twelve-month research stays at the GHI Warsaw with an option to extend for a further year. Candidates must fulfil the formal conditions of entry to and residence in Poland. The institute provides the scholarship holders with research infrastructure, library and offices.

The requirements include:

• A research project to be conducted on site (particularly welcome are proposals that are linked to the current research of the GHI Warsaw).

• Language skills in German, English and/or Polish (two of the three languages are required)

• Residence in Warsaw and intensive participation in the academic activities at the GHI

The amount of the scholarship is EUR 1800 per month. Additional allowances may be paid for childcare.

The fellowships start on April 1, 2024.

– Cover letter

– curriculum vitae

– Information on language skills

– List of publications

– approx. 2-3 page outline of the research project to be conducted during the fellowship (topic, research questions, methodological approach, state of the art, work program, precise work plan for the time of the fellowship, sources and literature).

References to the current profile and projects at the GHI are required.

Invitations for online interviews via Zoom will be sent, after reviewing the applications.
