Nela Milic’s Residency at Centrala: Art, Memory, and Community

Centrala is hosting the residency of artist Nela Milic from 1 October to 9 November 2024. As the final chapter of the Hybrid Landscape project, this residency invites audiences to explore themes of memory, identity, and community through installations, performances, and workshops. Through her approach, Milic explores how art connects people, heals divisions, and preserves memories in a fast-changing world.

Art in Motion: Centrala’s Central and Eastern European Network in Conversation with Fierce and Nela Milic
16 October, 6:30PM – 8:30PM
In collaboration with Fierce Festival, this panel discussion will delve into how political contexts, migration, and heritage shape artistic identity and resistance. Featuring Nela Milic, Olga Drygas (Nowy Theatre, Warsaw), and the CEEUS Network, the conversation will explore how art navigates conflict and fosters community resilience.
Open Rehearsal
17 October, 6:00PM – 8:00PM
Get an intimate look at the creative process behind Milic’s work during this open rehearsal. Nela will be experimenting with projectors, newspapers, books, and personal photo albums, accompanied by performer Tina Hofman. This session offers a rare insight into how performance art takes shape.
Nela Milic and Breaking Borders at Centrala
9 November, 2:00PM – 5:00PM
To conclude the residency, Milic will lead a special multimedia workshop as part of the Being Human Festival. Titled Breaking Borders at Centrala, this event marks the anniversaries of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the European Union’s eastern expansion. Join Nela in reflecting on these historical moments through creative engagement. Following this, Paulina Korobkiewicz will launch her photobook Homeland, which explores migrant experiences in West Bromwich and Hyson Green. The event will end with Polish food and music.
