Third Annual Memory Studies Association Conference
June 25-28th, 2019
The MSA is especially pleased to be able to bring the next conference to the city of Madrid, and have this city become a partner in the growing field of memory studies. Our colleagues, based in the research project “The Politics of Memory in Contemporary Spain” (located at the Institute of Language, Literature and Anthropology of the Spanish National Research Council (ILLA-CSIC)), have agreed to become our local organizing team for the Third Annual Conference of the Memory Studies Association.
You will now find up-to-date information on the conference here as it becomes available.
The conference will be held at the Moncloa Campus of the Complutense University of Madrid, one of Spain’s oldest and largest universities with a vibrant community. The conference will be hosted by the Faculty of Philology, which is located in the first completed building of the campus, inaugurated in 1933. The plenaries will be held at the Faculty of Medicine.
The Moncloa Campus is closely linked to the memory of the Spanish Civil War, being the scene of one of the important battles in the defense of Madrid. Nowadays we can still see the bullet holes in some of the older buildings. At the same time, in its current architectural form we can observe some of the ideological principles of Francoism, which were introduced during the reconstruction of the campus. During the war, the university lost part of its scientific, artistic and bibliographic heritage, as well as a good part of the faculty, mainly due to exile.
