Connecting Memories Research Initiative 1st Annual Symposium

June 1st, 2018

University of Edinburgh

Keynote Speaker: Prof Andrew Hoskins, University of Glasgow

The Connecting Memories Research Initiative is delighted to invite postgraduate students, early career researchers and academics to participate in a one-day symposium exploring interdisciplinary perspectives relating to memory. The main objectives of the symposium are to generate dialogue and stimulate new ideas as well as encourage a sense of community among scholars working on memory in the UK, especially in Scotland and the North of England. To facilitate a productive exchange of knowledge and start discussions, we propose a series of round-table sessions. Each panel will comprise of five speakers and a moderator. Speakers will have five minutes to discuss a theoretical perspective or talk about a point of methodology or share an insight drawn from their research relating to memory. After the speakers’ ‘micro-presentations’, the moderator will make connections and facilitate a dialogue between speakers (if required). There will then be time for a brief audience Q&A. There will be at least two roundtable sessions. If necessary, we will run parallel panels. Therefore, not fewer than 10 approaches to memory will be discussed over the course of the day. Proposals for a 5-minute micro-presentation should be submitted by 8th May 2018 to info@connectingmemories.org and include a maximum 200-word abstract, in English. The symposium will be rounded off by a keynote lecture by Professor Andrew Hoskins. There will be ample networking opportunities during the coffee and lunch breaks as well as during the wine reception. The symposium is free of charge. Snacks, drinks and lunch will be provided. A number of bursaries of up to £75 are available to cover or contribute towards presenters’ local, national or international travel costs to attend the symposium. We are grateful to the UoE School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures and to the Institute for Modern Languages Research for their generous support with this event.
