Call for PhD Funding Opportunity

PhD in Latin American studies at the University of St Andrews

The School of Modern Languages at the University of St Andrews welcomes PhD applications in a wide range of research areas across its seven language departments (Arabic & Persian, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish) and Comparative Literature programme.

With a vibrant research culture which spans a wide range of national cultures and cross-disciplinary themes, including:

  • creativity and performance
  • history, politics and society
  • medieval and early modern studies
  • medical humanities and cultures of science
  • postcolonial and transnational studies
  • translation studies and linguistics
  • gender and sexuality studies
  • memory studies.

Deadline for application submissions: before January 6 2023.

Funding Opportunities:

The School offers a limited number of PhD scholarships and fee waivers and supports applications to a number of funding schemes.

Early application is essential, so if you would like your proposal to be considered for submission to the SGSAH AHRC PhD scholarship competition, you should apply by 25 November 2022. The application process involves several stages, and they recommend that you contact us as early as possible to discuss your ideas. Please request the pre-selection template from the School of Modern Languages (modlangs@st-andrews.ac.uk).

Luciano Miller Handsel Scholarship

The Luciano Miller Handsel Scholarship is a three-year award, paying £17,000 per year towards maintenance costs incurred by the award holder and is accompanied by a tuition fee waiver.

The Scholarship will be available to students wishing to undertake a PhD in Latin American studies within the School of Modern Languages. If possible, preference will be given to students wishing to work in Argentinian studies. 

The award is open to entrants commencing PhD studies in September 2023 or January 2024. Preference will be given to students commencing in September 2023.
