The journal Acta Universitatis Carolinae – Studia Territorialia invites authors to submit articles for its 2018 special issue entitled “Memory of Genocide in Interdisciplinary Perspectives.”

With the horrors of the Holocaust and the wartime mass killing still echoing in 1948, the United Nations defined “crimes committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group” as a crime of genocide. Given the international constellation in the post-WWII period, this definition stopped short of including crimes committed against political, cultural, and social groups. The atrocities that all these groups suffered left an indelible trace in the memories of all involved. What do these memories say about the past? Who were the memory makers with respect to a particular genocide? What commemorative practices were used by post-genocide societies to shape their collective memories? What impact did the survivors’ testimonies have for their group’s narratives? And how were these crimes reflected in societies whose members had committed violent acts? These questions as well as many more shall be discussed in the proposed special issue. The editors welcome proposals for original theoretical, comparative, and case studies providing both disciplinary and multidisciplinary perspectives (history, law, sociology, anthropology, literature, among others). In line with the journal’s aims and scope the contributions should be related to North America, Europe, and post-Soviet Eurasia in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The articles are to be written in English and should be ideally 7,000 to 10,000 words long. The contributions are to be sent to the editorial team at stuter@fsv.cuni.cz or uploaded via AUC Studia Territorialia journal management system. The authors should consult the submission guidelines for further instructions. All contributions are subject to double-blind peer-review.

Abstract submission deadline: June 15, 2018.
Notification on further status: by June 30, 2018.
Article submission deadline: September 15, 2018.
